16.4 - Operating Time of SETI

In 1895, Guglielmo Marconi[4] first used electromagnetic waves on our planet, about 120 years ago. 1901 saw the first transatlantic radio communication. From 1905 wireless radio traffic[21] was generally used, thus for 110 years.
In an orbit of 55 light years, all these electromagnetic signals emitted by alien civilizations should have been detected to this day. And if they had answered, their signal would have reached us today. However, this has not yet happened.
The operating time of SETI is now 55 years.

16.4.1 Conclusion Within a radius of 55 light years there is no civilization that can or wants to communicate with us via electromagnetic waves.

The light year is an astronomical unit of measurement. A light year is the distance that light passes through in a year. That's 9.461 trillion km. [22]
